Why 'Some Like it Hot'

Based on the German film 'Fanfares of Love', 'Some Like it Hot' is a great comedy classic directed by Billy Wilder.

This film stars Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon as Joe and Jerry, musicians who work at a speakeasy during prohibition. They quickly lose their jobs however when the speakeasy is raided and its' owner, mobster Spats Columbo (George Raft) is arrested.

A few weeks later, on their way home Joe and Jerry witness a gang slaughter in a parking garage. Afraid that they will end up on the mobster's hit list, Joe thinks up a plan to disguise themselves; Soon they are all dolled up as Josephine and Daphne and ready to perform in Sweet Sue's all-girl orchestra.

On the train on their way to Florida to perform with Sweet Sue's, the boys meet singer Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe). Joe and Jerry both fall quickly in love with her, but obviously their feminine identities prevent them from acting on their feelings. Both are intent on charming her, and as a result a long series of complicated gender-bending ploys begins to unfold.

Making things even more complex, we learn that the flirtatious millionaire, Osgood Fielding (Joe E. Brown) has fallen in love with 'Daphne'. Then just when you think the plot cannot thicken any more, Spats Columbo and his gang arrive in Florida.

'Some Like it Hot' was the highest grossing comedy film up to 1959 and was nominated for several Academy Awards. Its' humor is classic and just seems to get better with age.
